This is not simply a book review; this is more of a testimony. I have never told anyone this before, at least not in such detail. But here goes. The fictional Millie Keith books have impacted my life most, second to the Bible. I have been re-reading them since I first read them at age 10, and I know I will continue to learn the lessons from them forever. They're not just kid books. They are amusing; they make me laugh. They are touching and I always cry on the last book. They are jam-packed with adventure and they come to life with such vivid reality that I literally feel like Millie Keith is my dearest friend. I cannot express my feelings on this adequately and I wish I could simply transfer my feelings to your heart. But since that is altogether impossible, I shall try to describe the points I love to the best of my ability. Thank you. Scripture: She helped me gain a love for the Bible. She knew every book by feel, they were worn with at least hot chocolate spilt in lamentations. She later gave her Bible to the unchristian Charles whom she loved. Her father bought her a new one with a concordance. She had so much joy in her Bible and had so many verses memorized. When Gordon got tragically hurt with a musket ramrod (book 2) she held his hand and felt God leading her to quote a verse. That verse was the first one that he realized was the truth. He became a Christian after his accident. prayer: her aunt Wealthy had memorized so many verses they would spill out of her when she prayed. Millie would pray out loud to God not caring if someone heard her. priorities: Our life is a few gold coins. We only can spend them on certain things; they spent them for God. (book 8) trust: Her mother taught about trust- you trust a chair because it has never let you down before. That is like the trust we place in God..he is always reliable. your heart: her Pappa advised her to give God the key to her heat. she wrote it in her diary and always remembered it even when she wanted to marry Charles. She held strong, even carrying a verse around in her pockets. Because of this great example I have written the same thing in my diary. patience- She is human. She would get annoyed at her siblings and pinch them; she felt guilty because she once let the sun go down without apologizing. Her mother advised her to pray about it and be patient; one day Millie realized she hadn't felt the urge to pinch them in a while. (book 1) growing up: She gave her poor friend an elegant dress that she had been sewing for months. She went to the ball in her old one. (book 1) It was a sign of growing maturity. Later when she had to leave for Roselands by herself (book 3), she was packing in her room when her mother teared up. She said she looked so grown up standing there just now! I have always wanted to be mature and grown up because of this. her adventures: she shot a bear (book 7), saved a stagecoach from falling off a cliff (book 5), saved a baby's life in Bolivia (book 8), and was altogether pretty brave. her praising: She would run and jump in the marshes, climbing on fences and shouting praises to God. Psalms flowed out of her. Verses and Scriptures galore. her family- She would swing on her swing on Keith hill, a little pool of Heaven spilled out. Her Pappa was a lawyer who read to them the Bible each night, her Mamma a strong lady who started a Ladies Aid Society to help people in need. She took after both of her parents. her medical knowhow- she had watched many accidents and births; knew how to take care of basics and blisters, she saved a baby's life once, etc. her helpfulness- She would get up in the morning and make pancakes with no one asking her. They lived on the frontier and the family had to do many chores, however she would put others before herself. her love for good books- she would read classics, quote Shakespeare, and once read a book about sheep which came in handy once when a random guy wondered what was wrong with his sheep (they had runny noses. It was caused by fly larvae in the snouts, called grub in nose if you want to know) her passions- She was a strong abolitionist and even helped slaves escape. She was called to missions. She went to New Orleans and Bolivia for ministry. She loved to draw and she wasn't good at it, still striving to get better anyway. She loves to write in her journal, as I do. And like me, she loved to play piano and would drink it in when she got a chance. She even gave piano lessons! When she didn't get a chance, she would play imaginary keys. It makes me smile. her faith- she went on a long trip far away from Christians or her family and kept strong in the faith, doing what was right: praying out loud, teaching slaves the Bible, bringing the wounded soup, never wavering in her beliefs. and my favorite scenes from any of the books are when she shares the gospel: she was watching an old lady through death watch and led her to Christ; she was gentle and patient even when she did not feel like it; she went to Bolivia and fought against the forces of evil demons. Scripture and prayer were used for every one of these, as it should be. They are quite like no others.
They are fiction books but they are good enough to highlight. They are a story and a devotional book all in one. They are meaningful to me.... And they changed my life.
