Bookstores are going out of business. Libraries are no longer used. And online ebooks seem like the way to go. But are they? For me, there is no better place to go on a quiet Saturday morning than a bookstore. A place of introverts silently gathering with the smells of coffee beans in the air, a place of warmth and dreamings of other worlds. A place of butterflies squiggling and swishing in the magic of your heart. There is a certain ambiance you wouldn't find on your living room couch, squinting at your iPhone screen reading an ebook. No, there is nothing the same. Your phone may have a whole social media universe at your fingertips, but certainly does not have a wonderland full of creased yellowy books loved almost to death. Or new crisp pages creamy with wonder and delight, it just depends on what kind of bookstore it is - new or used.
I love bookstores because they are good for the soul; they can be a place of community and friendships or a place of solitary confinement in the corner just watching the world fade away while creating new ones. Whether writing or reading, standing in line at the book signing, drinking coffee, just thinking, or chatting with the random lady at the neighbor table....bookstores are good for more than just books. Bookstores are Good for More Than Just Books The first time I remember stepping into a bookstore, I was enraptured by the displays of pictures of kids far away in poverty, available to sponsor today. It caught my attention immediately and never let go. Today I sponsor one child from Peru and write to about nine more. Today that same wonderful bookstore, Family Christian Bookstore, is about to close its doors forever. Nevermore will those displays catch someone's attention or cause them to change a life. Nevermore will that same bookstore that launched my reading and writing passion give inspiration to others. And nevermore will any small child, like me, step into the wonderful world of Christian books for the first time and never leave the same. Nevermore. Save bookstores today.
